Ben Laifsky and Autumn Hood didn’t meet in a boardroom; they met in the trenches.
Starting in 2007, they spearheaded a large digital program for a corporate sales team. With Ben responsible for Operations and Product, and Autumn leading Fulfillment, they operated at a breakneck pace —building hundreds of websites, campaigns, and videos every month. They were the first ones in and the last ones out.
But in the corporate world, everything comes at a cost. Ben and Autumn realized that “corporate life” meant constant compromise. Innovation was stifled by quarterly earnings reports. The “obvious, right, next thing”—the move that would actually help the client—was not the corporate priority of the moment.
They realized they couldn’t serve the stock market and the client at the same time. So, in 2013, they chose the customer.
